Central Park steering committee co-chair Brian Saunderson said it best last Monday night:

"My question (to council) is this: does the Town of Collingwood deserve this, and my answer is yes."

For the last decade, the Town of Collingwood has struggled with how to replace its aging recreational infrastructure, especially how to ensure the community has adequate ice time, not only to meet the needs of existing users such as adult recreational leagues, minor hockey, and figure skating, but also the demand for equal time for female hockey teams. Throw in the teams (boys and girls) from both high schools into the mix, and it becomes a scheduling entanglement worthy of Gordias.

As well, as every year ticks by, so does the obsolescence of the Eddie Bush. It may be a solid barn, built by shipyard workers in 1949 and christened the Memorial Arena in honour of our returning veterans from the Second World War, but equipment wears out; earlier this year, the arena was shut down for several days so workers could deal with a burst pipe. While an extreme occurrence, that pipe was symptomatic of an ailing facility.

It's not just the Eddie Bush that needs to be replaced.
